I'm Wearing My Hair Anyway I Want To...

It's a protective style for me!

If you know me and love me, you know how much I love Beyonce. In my eyes Beyonce can do no wrong. You come for her, you come for me. I am a forever member of the Beyhive.

Why am I talking about this? Because I reminisce about Beyonce's different hairstyles over her career. Then I am reminded of Beyonce posting pictures of her beautiful and healthy natural hair too.

You know what I thought? This DIVA is a bad ass with or without her natural hair.

Which brings me to my point of writing this post in the first place.

STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY DAMN HAIR.

So what has been my experience when it comes to hair? I've had braids, extensions, weaves, you name it *Shirley Caesar Voice.

I've always gotten the "Can I touch your hair?" "Is that your hair?" and even "How much you pay for your hair"?

Yes it's a lot. But I don't believe that black women should automatically be judged by the way they choose to wear their hair. I also don't like when we are rejected sometimes within our community and labeled as "self haters" because we decide not to wear natural hairstyles.

Instead, why not call it FREEDOM? FREEDOM to choose how we want to wear our hair. FREEDOM to change up the color and style while PROTECTING our natural hair. Why not CHANGE the narrative.

Now below is a picture of me and my natural hair. I had just left the salon and was feeling myself. I got my edges trimmed up and my hair felt so fresh and conditioned. Now BEFORE I revealed my natural hair, I covered it with extensions and/or weaves. AND LOOK HOW DAMN HEALTHY MY HAIR IS BECAUSE OF IT. I have no heat damage and I made sure to wash my hair twice a week, condition, and braid it underneath.

Now this post isn't knocking my beautiful black sisters that wear their natural hair because I ADMIRE how creative we can get with natural styles. All I'm saying is that it shouldn't be a big deal if we just decide not to wear our natural hair sometimes!

Honestly I do it for the convenience of having a quick morning routine because I'm not spending that much time styling my hair. My natural hair is able to grow, maintain length, and just take a break from styling it everyday.

So stop making this so damn deep. If you want to wear your natural hair DO IT GIRL. If you want to WIG IT UP do that too. But no black woman should have to defend being black just because she doesn't wear her natural hair.

I can be versatile with my natural hair or fake hair and I feel FREE doing both.

Excuse me while I go "whip my hair back and forth".

Love,

Rach
